Missing Tooth- Dental Implants for the Win

Dental implants are the answer to your missing teeth woes. They are permanent replacement teeth that look and function just like your natural teeth. It provides support for your replacement teeth, keeping the look and function of your teeth naturally.

What are dental implants made of?

Dental implants are made of three components. First, the titanium post. This screw-like metal post is implanted into the jawbone, where it fuses into the natural tissue. This will act as the root for the dental implant. Then, the abutment is a piece that is affixed to the top of the implant post. This provides a base that the prosthetic tooth attaches to. Third, is the prosthetic tooth. This can be a dental crown, a bridge, or a partial denture.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

You may be a candidate for dental implants if you have a missing tooth or several missing teeth. You should be healthy enough to undergo oral surgery, but your dentist may evaluate you first.

Dental implants require oral surgery, and not everyone is a candidate for surgery. Your dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon for a dental implant consultation and evaluation. During a consultation, the surgeon asks about your medical and dental history and performs an oral exam. This exam may include x-rays and possibly a CT scan.

Your dentist and oral surgeon work together closely for your case. The surgeon performs the dental implant surgery, while your dentist attaches the prosthetic tooth to the post.

How do I care for dental implants?

Caring for dental implants is similar to caring for natural teeth. Dental implants should be treated like natural teeth. You’ll need to maintain oral hygiene at home, and keep up with regular dental visits. The dental implant itself won’t be able to decay, however, neighboring teeth may.

You should also avoid chewing on hard foods that could cause damage to the dental implant. You’ll also need to avoid bad habits that could cause teeth grinding or clenching, such as playing sports or grinding your teeth while sleeping.
